memorial day remembrances and celebrationsThis Memorial Day Weekend, the communities of The Triangle offer numerous ways for residents to pay respect to the American soldiers who’ve served our country in wars past and present. There are services, ceremonies, and celebrations throughout the area dedicated to honoring and remembering those who’ve fallen in service to our country throughout history. Find an event close to you to celebrate the long weekend and commemorate those who’ve served.

WRAL Freedom Balloon Fest

This weekend, Friday through Monday, the town of Fuquay-Varina hosts the Freedom Balloon Fest, a long weekend of skies filled with the bright colors of spectacular hot air balloons paying tribute to our soldiers, as well as rides benefitting charities, field games, food vendors, and a Merchant, Arts & Craft Village.

Memorial Day Remembrance & Living History

A special Memorial Day observance event will be held at Bennett Place Historic Site in Durham on Saturday and Sunday, memorial day living historian10am to 4pm and 10am to 3pm, respectively. The event will feature living historians dressed as soldiers throughout history, military displays, and more.

Cary Theater Special Showings

This weekend, Cary Theater in Downtown Cary will feature two special showings. Saturday at 7pm begins “Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision”, the story of Maya Lin, the man who designed the Vietnam Memorial Wall in DC.

On 2pm Sunday, the theater will show “Flags of Our Fathers”, which tells the story of the WWII soldiers who raised the US flag at the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue: An American Celebration

big band wind musicKoka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary welcomes the Triangle Wind Ensemble for a performance of big-band, vocal soloists, and a special salute to veterans. The show begins Sunday at 7:30pm.

Memorial Day Observances on Monday

Raleigh: Summerfield North hosts the 20th Annual Memorial Day Parade at 10:30am. Raleigh Memorial Park in the Veterans Garden hosts music, refreshments, and a balloon release at 11am. There will also be a wreath-laying ceremony at the Capitol Grounds and a Marine Corps League guest speaker.

Cary: Veterans Freedom Park hosts a ceremony and celebration honoring all veterans from 2 to 2:30pm.

remembering the fallenHolly Springs: the DG War on Terror Memorial Service remembers soldiers with an 11am service.

Apex: The Cambridge Village of Apex will host a Memorial Day service at 10:30am.

Garner: The Garner Veterans Memorial at Lake Benson Park features a 1:30pm special service.

Wake Forest: Hope Baptist Church features a special celebration from 9am to 4pm that includes a barbecue, military vehicle rides, music, children’s activities, and a parade.

Chapel Hill: The Orange County Peace Coalition presents “Hearing the Voiceless: Refugees at Home and Abroad” at 2pm at Extraordinary Ventures to remember all victims of war.
